Walnut Canyon National Monument

Walnut Canyon is a beautiful canyon located near Flagstaff.
(Specs: It’s about 20 miles long, 400 feet deep and about 1/4 mile wide.)
The canyon itself is gorgeous, and honestly, it would have been worth the drive just to go there for some hiking. Let’s be honest, when we first saw it on the NPS website, we thought that was all that it was.  Our brief research said the beauty of the canyon itself was enough reason to drive up for a visit. Despite our ignorance, this beautiful canyon is made even more special by the massive amounts of cliff dwellings carved into the walls.
Hiking down into it, it felt like everywhere we looked, on both sides of the canyon, were more and morestructures built 100’s of feet up from the canyon floor. We seriously couldn’t look anywhere without seeing more of these dwellings. It was magnificent.
The Island trail, which takes you about halfway down into the canyon, walks you right next to a large amount of the rooms. I know it’s something that can’t go one forever, because it’s too much wear on the ruins, but for now, being able to have the kids walk into the spaces and really feel the history is pretty much the most awesome thing ever.
