Sometimes, you just need to be willing to roll with the punches. We were so excited to be back out on the road again, but after only one day, our plans got a little bit derailed. A massive snowstorm was headed into Arizona, and if we stayed on our current path, we were going to get caught right in the middle of it. We had planned on spending the night at a little Harvest Host Winery in northern Arizona. We weren’t really worried about how the Solitude would handle the snow, we should be plenty well-insulated to stay nice and toasty. The concern was if we would be able to make it out the next morning if the area got the 8-10 inches of snow.
To save us the trouble of finding out, we just opted to switch up the route a bit and avoid the situation entirely. After a bit of digging, we landed on Schoolhouse Campground in Tonto National Forest. This campground is located right on Roosevelt Lake. There are no hookups here, so be prepared for a dry camping experience. (If you need cell service, we didn’t get anything on our AT&T networks, but Verizon was able to pull through with 2-3 bars) I’m positive that it’s a hotbed of activity in the summer (There’s a boat ramp on site) but magically, we timed it perfectly to avoid all the crowds. There were only a couple of other campers there when we rolled in and it honestly felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.
The evening here was gorgeous. We watched the storm clouds dance across the mountains by the lake. We went for walks, sat outside and played a little soccer. All in all, it was the perfect place to welcome us back to the road.
