When we left Minnesota, we had originally planned to stay at The Porter Sculpture Park. This is a really unique sculpture park right west of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. One of the pieces that you have to navigate with utilizing this membership, though, is that these hosts don’t have the ability make reservations in advance. The recommendation is that you don’t call more than 2 days before your arrival to check and see if they have the availability. Unfortunately, this also means needing to be flexible enough to shift plans if they’re already full when you call. That’s what happened with our plans. Apparently, the Porter Sculpture Park fills very quickly so there was no space left when we called.
No biggie. We just started digging to see what else might be available. And that’s how we ended up at the very quaint Wilde Prairie Winery. The folks working the winery were incredibly kind and set us up with a nice tasting flight. They had plenty of outdoor seating for us to sit and enjoy the evening, but best of all, they had a bounce house set up on the lawn for the kids to play in. They were in heaven.
We parked our rig on the back side of the winery. It gave us a view of the vineyards to one side and fields of corn on the other. I’ve never thought of South Dakota as a big “wine state”, but if I had, that’s exactly how I would imagine it.
